Governor launches Climate Action Plan and Amaravati Plastic Free City campaign in Guntur
Guntur, August 12: Governor of Andhra Pradesh and President of Indian Red Cross Society, A.P. State Branch, Sri S. Abdul Nazeer launched the ‘A.P. Climate Action Plan and Amaravati Plastic-free City Campaign,’ at a programme organised by A.P. Red Cross here on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Sri Abdul Nazeer has said that the ‘A.P. Climate Action Plan and Amaravati Plastic Free City Campaign,’ was a unique initiative by AP Red Cross and lauded the participation of students, Junior Red Cross members, young participants, and volunteers in the campaign. He expressed the confidence that the campaign will be spread across the entire State, through coordinated efforts of all stakeholders.
The Governor said that through this campaign, people should be made aware of the ill-effects of excessive use of plastic in our daily life and eliminate the use of single-use plastic by promoting sustainable habits, and protect the environment for future generations. He pointed out that India has a per capita plastic consumption of 11 kg and about 3.5 million metric tonnes of plastic waste is generated annually. He said the dumping of plastic waste can deteriorate soil and underground water quality due to leaching of additives, colourants, stabilizers and fillers present in the different categories of plastic products and reminded that the Central govt. has notified the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, prohibiting identified single use plastic items.
He further said that the Goal 13 of the United Nations Sustainable Development calls for urgent action to combat climate change. He appreciated the launch of A.P. Climate Action Campaign with the support of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), Geneva, Switzerland. The Governor urged the Vice-Chancellors to take up the A.P. Climate Action Campaign in the colleges with the active participation of all students and faculty members. Later, the Governor has administered a Green Pledge by the students.
